Stephen completed his undergraduate studies in animal science and pasture science at the Free State University during the late 1970s. He proceeded with post-graduate studies at the same university, and completed a masters degree, specialising in small ruminant science during 1984.
He worked as professional officer in small ruminant science at FSU from 1981 to 1983. From 1984 to 1987 he was R&D officer in animal nutrition with Rumevite, before joining Vleissentraal as sheep feedlot manager until 1989.
From 1990 to 2002 he worked as an academic at the Universities of Zululand and Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal), lecturing in animal science subjects.
In August 2002 he joined Meadow Feeds Natal as nutritionist at the Pietermaritzburg mill.
In March 2005 he was promoted to his current position as ruminant technical executive at the Animal Feed Division of Astral Foods
